Featured Artist: Joan Muckelbauer

This is a good month to feature Joan Muckelbauer because she’s one of our unsung heroes, and this is probably her most heroic month. In addition to all the other things she does for us (which we’ll get to in a minute), Joan is in charge of the shop inventory and this month she and her crew are slogging in the trenches, inventorying everything in the shop and contacting artists to make sure everybody’s records agree and to ask for more. We’re also moving the shop this month, which involves a lot of lugging of merchandise, display racks and cubes, tables, you name it—we’ll have to move it.

In addition to being in charge of the shop inventory, Joan is on the Olive Craig Gallery Board and is its Treasurer. She is the Assistant Director of the Gallery. With her wide experience she made an excellent judge for the 2006 Sault Summer Arts Festival. And she is an artist whose specialty is hooking rugs. Her designs are her own and range from primitive to abstract. When she teaches workshops she turns out converts whose zeal (almost) matches her own. She’s a one-person, rug hooking celebration. She invests the same spirit that fuels her rug hooking into other things she does and it’s contagious, making her a joy to work with. It’s hard to imagine how we would have gotten along if she and Bob hadn’t decided to settle in Sault Ste. Marie.
