A good friend of our used to complain that since he retired he never had any free time. Tom Marshall is a great illustration of that phenomenon. A graduate of Alma College with a B.A. in Fine Arts, he taught in the Sault Ste. Marie school system for thirty years, retiring in June of 2006 to pursue his art full time. When he retired, he was President of the Olive Craig Gallery Board and had been for years.

In May of 2006 he had a joint exhibition with Joel Lake, “The Sporting Life,” that filled both Alberta House Galleries. In March of 2007 he took the First Place Award in "Bridges," the annual juried show of the Olive Craig Gallery. Gordon MacKenzie was the juror. In August he and his wife Kate (Marshall Art Studio) won the Best of Show Award in the Sault Summer Arts Festival.

Tom’s award in Bridges was for a pastel painting, "Bordeaux Creek Crossing," a work in a medium that Tom has been using extensively of late. He, Dave Bigelow, and Ken Hatfield have been painting together, working outside in the summer. Tom and Dave Bigelow begin their terms as board members of the Great Lakes Pastel Society this month, and Tom, Dave, and Ken have a G.A.S.S. (Gentlemen Artist Sketching Society) Exhibition scheduled in Alberta House during May that will fill both galleries.

Tom, his wife Kate, and Dave Bigelow all had work in the juried Northern Exposure XIV Exhibit, which just closed in Escanaba. This month, you can see Tom and Kate’s work in an exhibit in the LSSU Library Gallery (see samples of Kate's work in the LSSU Library Gallery section of Exhibits, Tom's work below).
